01 / What Meridian knows

Earth is not a closed world.

Meridian has accumulated sufficient testimony, historical record and physical evidence to conclude that some supernatural peoples did not originate on Earth. They reached it through temporary fractures connecting this world to other places—or realities—which the Commission describes collectively as crossings.

A crossing may be experienced as a rift, doorway, altered landscape or moment in which the boundary between two places briefly ceases to hold. Its form, duration and cause vary considerably. Some appear to occur naturally, while others have been opened through deliberate action, damaged artefacts or circumstances Meridian still cannot reproduce or explain.

The word realm is similarly practical rather than definitive. It describes somewhere beyond ordinary Earth that can be reached through a crossing. Meridian does not claim that every realm obeys the same physical laws, belongs to the same cosmology or can be mapped in relation to any other.

A crossing explains how somebody arrived.
It does not explain everything they are.

02 / The displaced

Most crossings leave people behind, not open doors.

Those who reached Earth did so for many reasons. Some crossed intentionally in search of refuge, opportunity or escape. Others were exiled, pursued, carried through by accident or born to families displaced long before them. Many crossings closed immediately, leaving no safe or reliable route home.

Over centuries, displaced peoples settled, concealed themselves and became part of human history. Some established lineages on Earth. Some passed aspects of their nature to human descendants, while others changed humans through blood, injury, ritual or prolonged contact. The resulting population may eventually bear little resemblance to the small number who first arrived.

Meridian records distinguish between original vampires—members of a people for whom vampirism is a natural, inborn state—and humans subsequently transformed by their blood. Evidence places the earliest originals beyond Earth, although an original vampire alive today may have crossed personally or been born into a displaced lineage. Most vampires encountered on Earth are transformed humans rather than originals.

03 / Realms and human belief

Recognition is not the same as understanding.

Encounters with displaced beings have contributed to folklore, religion and stories across many cultures. Accounts of fae countries, celestial messengers, infernal visitors and impossible wildernesses may preserve fragments of genuine contact. Those fragments have also been translated, embellished and reshaped by generations attempting to explain something outside their experience.

Meridian possesses reports consistent with realms and peoples humans might describe as angelic or demonic. It does not treat those words as proof that it has located Heaven, Hell or the destination of human souls. They are broad descriptions inherited from witnesses, inhabitants and cultural interpretation—not reliable measures of morality.

Not every supernatural nature came through a rift. Human psychic ability, learned magical practice, ghosts and other phenomena may possess entirely earthly origins. Crossings are one part of the hidden world’s history, not a single explanation imposed upon all of it.

04 / Present-day crossings

Rare does not mean finished.

Crossings still occur, but Meridian has found no dependable network, complete map or method by which they can be opened safely on demand. An event may admit one person, affect a small area or disappear before investigators arrive. Evidence of an older crossing is often discovered only through an unusual survivor, inherited object or pattern buried within local history.

When a crossing is identified, Meridian seeks to understand the immediate danger, protect those affected and determine whether it can be closed or stabilised. A displaced person is not treated as hostile merely because of their origin. As elsewhere, the Commission assesses conduct, circumstance and risk rather than assigning guilt by nature.

Writing crossings and the displaced

A displaced character needs only the part of their origin that meaningfully affects their story. Their entire home realm does not need to be defined unless the narrative goes there. A stable gateway, mass arrival or extensively developed new realm represents major setting lore and should be agreed before use.

Leave the universe large enough to contain what has not yet crossed into the story.

Some came seeking Earth. Others simply survived arriving here.

After enough generations, displacement begins to look like belonging.
